7 Secrets of Sorority Life No Sister Will Ever Reveal

If you’re a Potential New Member (PNM), you may be craving finding out the secrets of sorority life. However, a real sister would never spill her secrets to a non-member, with no exceptions.

That’s why if you’re looking to be part of a sorority, you might want to know these seven secrets in advance.

1. Sorority Food Isn’t Always Good

If you’re expecting to be met with delicious food in the canteen every day, you’re in for a shock. Sorority sisters have their chef to cater to their needs, but with so many girls in one group, not everyone will always be happy with their meals.

This also means that the food cycles can be repetitive, and pretty terrible for your health. Everything is cooked in masses of butter and oil, and after eating everything several times over, the novelty wears off a little.

2. Sorority Girls Drop Out Sometimes

Being a part of a sorority is an expensive hobby, first off. But aside from money, the reasons for girls dropping out varies a lot.

Many girls don’t feel they fit in with the clique, and others want to expand their horizons a little. It doesn’t mean you don’t feel the close bond to your sisters anymore, but once you drop out of a sorority, it’s not quite the same afterward.

As the pledge classes get smaller, the interest, in general, tends to drop with it, and more girls withdraw as they approach their difficult senior years.

3. Sorority Houses Can Be a Nightmare

It can be great to have your space and to be away from the pressures of your family, but the house you stay in might not be as cushy as you’re used to. Despite being spacious, the homes can sometimes be run-down and unkempt. With sorority sisters heading in and out all the time, it’s bound to have a little wear and tear.

However, sometimes the issues in the houses – such as noisy plumbing or crumbling wallpaper – can make the place feel a little less homely. Plus, with a large number of housemates and many others heading in and out, it starts to feel more like a hotel than a living space.

4. Sorority Life is Time Consuming

Most girls know that being a sorority will be a huge part of your life. That’s the appeal – it’s like having a second family. However, it’s not just heading to frat-parties now and then and having a giggle together. Sorority sisters take their roles seriously, and they’re expected to build a reputation before being allowing newbies in. It’s often done through a points system, and these can be gained from being in societies, going to socials and supporting the home team, are a few methods.

No one is forced to do anything, but it’s an unspoken rule that any sorority girl should get as involved as possible.

5. Sorority Obsession Sometimes Wears Off

Being in a sorority is a huge part of college life, and many girls love it with all of their heart. However, as college becomes more difficult and girls start to drop out, the fun can sometimes dwindle. As a freshman, you’ll probably be very active, but as you grow up and make more commitments, sorority life can take second place. While people often keep ties to their sorority, for the most part, they won’t remain an active member in their senior year.

6. Sorority Rules are Stringent

The National Panhellenic Conference keeps sororities in check, and they have a lot of strict rules that must be complied with. If rules are broken, the sisters may get fined, even if they only have a minor sorority crime.

For example, members aren’t allowed to contact Potential New Members in the week they’re recruiting, so if you don’t hear from them, it’s a good sign.

7. Members Aren’t All Best Friends for Life

Some of the girls fall out. Some of the sisters don’t get along right from the off, and it can cause tensions, especially if they’re living together. Sorority life isn’t always a walk in the park, and it takes commitment, resilience, and positivity to survive it. Plus, in each sorority, there can be up to two hundred girls, meaning you’ll only actually have a chance to connect with a few for real.

Though these secrets reveal there’s a more serious side to sorority life, it should never put you off joining! There’s plenty of fun to be had in a sorority so long as you stick to the rules and enter with an open mind!
